Where to Eat & Drink in Akakura Onsen: Our Favourite Après-Ski Spots

One of the best things about staying in Akakura Onsen is that almost everything is within walking distance. After a day on the mountain, the village comes alive with cosy izakayas, family-run restaurants, lively bars, and late-night karaoke spots, making it easy to enjoy a relaxed evening without needing to drive.

Before we dive into our favourites, it’s worth knowing that Akakura’s dining scene changes every season. New businesses open, others take a break, and some close altogether, so we always recommend checking Google Maps or the venue’s social media before heading out to confirm they’re open and to see their latest opening hours.

Most restaurants in Akakura are independently owned and relatively small. If you’re travelling during the winter season, we recommend taking a walk around the village on your first evening and making reservations in person for the rest of your stay. Larger groups can be more difficult to accommodate, and punctuality is highly valued in Japan: if you’ve made a reservation, be sure to arrive on time.

Sessions on the Mountain

Located inside the Taiko Hotel at the end of the main street, Sessions is a relaxed café and bar that’s perfect for a coffee during the day or drinks after skiing.

Shibata

A long-time favourite serving comforting Japanese classics including katsu curry, ramen, and hearty rice dishes.

Udon no Fu

A cosy, family-run restaurant specialising in handmade udon noodles and freshly prepared tempura.

Full Circle Bar

A welcoming spot for local craft beer, cocktails, regular live music, and a friendly international atmosphere.

Skate Bar

A laid-back local favourite with affordable drinks and a menu combining Japanese and Western comfort food.

Popcorn

Simple, fun, and always popular: every beer comes with complimentary popcorn.

Yoroku

A small yakiniku restaurant where you grill locally sourced meats yourself. Best suited to couples or small groups due to its intimate size.

Oyado Furuya

A traditional Japanese inn serving beautifully prepared teishoku set meals featuring a main dish, rice, soup, seasonal sides, and dessert.

Obake Bar & Restaurant

Hidden beneath the Myoko Guiding Company, Obake offers creative Japanese-Mexican fusion dishes alongside an excellent drinks menu.

Chōchin-za

A modern izakaya showcasing local ingredients with inventive small plates and seasonal flavours.

Kotobuki Pub

Asagao

A favourite among the local ski and snowboard community, best known for its charcoal-grilled yakitori and relaxed atmosphere.

Hunter

One of Akakura’s larger restaurants, specialising in sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. An excellent choice for bigger groups, but advance reservations are strongly recommended during peak season.

Hideout (Opening 2026)

One of the newest additions to the village, Hideout will be serving Japanese izakaya-style food and drinks in a relaxed bar setting from the 2026 season onwards.
