How to Get to Myoko: Our Recommended Route

Getting to Myoko is easier than many first-time visitors expect. While there are several ways to reach the region, our favourite option combines Japan’s world-famous rail network with the flexibility of having your own car once you arrive.

Our Recommended Route: Shinkansen + Rental Car

We recommend taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano Station, a journey of around one hour. From there, collect a rental car and enjoy a scenic 45-minute drive through the mountains to Myoko.

This option gives you the best of both worlds: a fast, comfortable journey from Tokyo and the freedom to explore Myoko’s seven ski resorts, local restaurants, hot springs, cafés, and nearby attractions at your own pace.

Renting a Car in Myoko

If you’d prefer not to drive from Nagano, another great option is to travel to Myoko first and rent a vehicle locally.

We recommend M.J Car Rental Services, a locally operated company offering convenient rentals for visitors staying in the area.

There are also several larger rental companies with pick-up locations at Nagano Station and Joetsu-Myoko Station, including options with English-language support and one-way rentals.

Driving in Winter

Driving around Myoko during winter is straightforward, but preparation is essential. All rental cars should be fitted with winter snow tyres, and a 4WD vehicle is highly recommended, particularly after heavy snowfall. If you’re collecting a car in snowy regions such as Nagano or Niigata, winter tyres are often included during the snow season, but it’s always worth confirming when booking.

If you plan on using expressways, consider renting an ETC card with your vehicle. This allows you to use Japan’s electronic toll system without stopping at toll booths and makes driving even more convenient.

Is a Car Worth It?

While it’s certainly possible to explore Myoko using trains, local buses, and resort shuttles, we almost always recommend hiring a car if your itinerary allows.

Having your own vehicle makes it easy to visit different ski resorts, discover hidden onsens, stop at roadside cafés, explore local villages, and enjoy day trips to places like Nagano City, the famous snow monkeys, or discovering hot springs—all on your own schedule.
